Hewden takes gold

UK rental company Hewden has received the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gold Award for Occupational Health and Safety for the fourth consecutive year, the first rental company to complete this achievement.

In order to qualify for the award, companies have to demonstrate that they have reduced the number of accidents and cases of ill health at work and have robust health and safety management systems in place.

Mark Albiston, operations director for Hewden said: “Health and safety is a primary focus at Hewden, covering both our workforce and the customers who use our products.”

“We are putting a lot of emphasis on creating a culture within the business, at the heart of which is our health and safety values. Over the past two months we have engaged with over 150 colleagues from across the company to set and embed standards for the business moving forward. The feedback has been excellent.”

Hewden has also gained bronze membership into Transport for London’s Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).

Introduced in 2008, it is a membership scheme open to all van and truck operators delivering in and around London and aims to establish industry benchmarks, helping companies become safer, greener and more efficient.

In order to achieve bronze status, a company has to undergo an independent assessment of its operations to demonstrate that it has effective systems, policies, procedures and risk assessments in place to meet standards in four areas: drivers and driver management, vehicle and fleet management, transport operations and performance management.

Albiston added: “The FORS membership is recognition of the improvements we’ve recently made within our transport operations. As a member of the FORS scheme, we have access to a range of services, advice and additional training which will help us to make even greater improvements.”
