First official glimpse of the new Terex 650 tonne Superlift 3800 crawler crane.
The new crawler crane can lift its maximum capacity to a radius of five to 12 metres, depending on configuration and the load chart is said to be around 20 percent better than the CC2800. The new crane can be ordered with a universal boom system or a boom with an integrated wind kit that allows the crane to erect turbines of up to 117 metres without using the superlift boom configuration.
With a more stable boom the light duty extension can handle up to 178 tonnes, while the maximum load moment for the new crane is boosted to 8,426 tonne/metres. Other features include a larger more comfortable cab and optional side mounted outriggers with built-in pressure sensors that allow the operator to monitor stability and ground conditions when raising or lowering long booms all of which can be done without the need for an assist crane.

Terex Cranes president Kevin Bradley said: “This is a very important launch for Terex. Improving on an already great crane, we created a completely new one by leveraging our customer driven innovation process, which combines our experience with a focus on solving the needs of the customer. Customers were involved in the development of this new crane from the start of the project. On this basis, features available on the CC 2800-1 were improved and new ones added.”

Vertikal Comment
The new Superlift 3800 is targeted at the ground carved out in the last couple of years or so by the Liebherr LR600/2 and LR1750 which have enabled Liebherr to gain ground on what was Terex / Demag territory.
At first glance it looks as though the new crane has the technical ability to do that, although it will depend on more than just performance. A lot of the big CC2800 owners will be looking at how many boom/jib components and lift attachments will be interchangeable with their existing cranes and price will be an issue, only in that first indications are that the new model will be substantially more expensive than the unit it replaces.
Regardless of these possible issues, all of which are short term – if they are real issues at all – the company had to come up with a crane that substantially changed the game if it is to retain its strong position in the sector.
Doing this to such a popular and successful model as the CC2800 was never going to be easy…. It is a little bit like when Volkswagen had to change from the original Beetle to the Golf. As in that case it looks like Terex has done all it can to make a successful transition. It’s down to the sales and marketing of the new product now.
