300 tonne Grove to Java

Indonesian state oil and gas company Pertamina has taken delivery of a Grove GMK6300L All-Terrain crane for use in the expansion of its oil refinery in Cilacap, Central Java.

The 300 tonne crane is the first Grove in the Pertamina fleet and was purchased through PT Altrak 1978, the Grove crane distributor for Indonesia. The six axle crane features a seven-section 80 metre boom, plus a 37 metre jib.

The Cilacap refinery, the largest in Indonesia, is currently undergoing an $800 million expansion to take its capacity up to 410,000 barrels of oil a day. A key role for the crane will be to place 2.5 tonne chimneys on 106 metre high towers.

Irsan Zamhir, construction equipment salesman at PT Altrak said: “We have discussed with Pertamina other equipment sales in the past, so when the company explained its current needs, we were able to recommend the GMK6300L. The reach and capacity of this crane are impressive, but what really interested the customer was its mobility and capacity at height. They were amazed at how quickly and efficiently this crane could be set up and moved from pick to pick.”

Pertamina operates six refineries in the country, producing over a million barrels of oil a day. In addition to the Cilacap expansion, plans are in place to expand a refinery near Balikpapan, East Kalimantan province.
