Bay takes 400th Manitowoc crawler

US based Bay Shipbuilding, a division of Europe’s largest shipbuilding company Fincantieri Marine group, has taken delivery of the 400th Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane to be built at the company’s facility in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

The 272 tonne Manitowoc 2250 has a 91.4 metre main boom and provides a maximum under hook height of 122 metres when combined with its luffing jib. The unit’s MAX-ER attachment boots the capacity to 453 tonnes and this can be increased to 1,300 tonnes when fitted with its Ringer attachment.

Replacing a 30 year old crawler crane, the 2250 will join a fleet of five cranes and will primarily be used in the company’s ship-repair division. The crane was purchased from Milwaukee based American State Equipment.

Matt Borchardt, regional business manager of Manitowoc, said: “This is a very special milestone that reflects the long-term commitment and faith our customers have in Manitowoc Cranes. And it’s very fitting that the 400th Manitowoc 2250 is going to our former sister company, right in our own backyard.”

Bay Shipping was purchased by Manitowoc in 1968 and remained with the company until 2009, when the company’s marine group, comprising of Bay Shipping, Marinette Marine, ACE Marine and Cleveland Shiprepair, was sold to Fincantieri Marine Group.
