A mobile suspended platform

When Brand Energy & Infrastructure Service in the Netherlands was asked to provide an access solution to work on the sea locks at the Oosterscheldekering, or Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier to give it an English name, it faced a real challenge, further complicated by adverse weather conditions, including frequent high winds and proximity to the sea.

It decided to work with Smart Platform Solutions (SPS) and sister-company Van Grootveld Engineering to develop a unique solution to the problem, and create a mobile platform that could work at substantial distances below ground level, and be capable of being withdrawn rapidly when necessary. The end product is a combination of a self-propelled boom lift with a traditional suspended platform or swing stage, if you prefer -which SPS is calling a Mobile Suspended Platform or MPS.

The Mobile Suspended Platform combines a self propelled boom lift with a 'swing Stage' suspended platform


The boom lift chosen for the base machine is a JLG straight telescopic, with the platform removed and replaced with a special boom end attachment which supports a support beam for the suspended platform to work from. The two self-climbing hoists are attached to the beam and support the modular platform below, which can be configured in a variety of lengths to suit the specific work. As with regular suspended platforms, it is equipped with a secondary back up device and cable reels, which are in full compliance with the European standard EN1808.

All normal suspended platform functions are operated from the platform in the normal manner, but due to the additional safety issues of the mobile base, steering and driving is only possible if the platform is in its fully raised position. The new concept is type-approved and according to SPS fulfills the requirements of European Machinery Directive and European standards EN280 and EN1808.

SPS said: “By offering a working envelope, which is extended well below ground level, the MSP makes reaching difficult locations possible, and can be removed from the location quick and easy, which was a requirement on this specific project. The device provides substantial time and costs savings compared to the scaffolding, normally used for this kind of work. SPS is now looking to market this solution to other companies that face similar challenges.
