The crane was apparently being stowed when the jib collapsed

A statement from the main contractor Babcock & Wilcox Volund said that the crane was being ‘disassembled’ at the time that the jib failed. Local witnesses claim that winds were very high when although we were unable to confirm this. Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. The Health & Safety Executive is investigating the cause. In the meantime an exclusion zone has been set up around the crane.

The contractor also said: “Safety is a core value at B&WV, and we are working with the contractor and authorities to determine the direct causes of the incident and the appropriate corrective actions to be taken. Work was resumed across the site except for an exclusion area around the damaged crane in accordance with HSE regulations.”
