HSE stops work on Hull sites

Construction inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive, together with Environmental Health Officers from Hull City Council stopped work on a number of construction sites in the Hull area this week because safety standards on sites were not being met.

On Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th November HSE inspectors visited 56 sites in total and stopped work on 24 occasions because people were at risk of sustaining serious, if not fatal, injuries. Inadequate scaffolding and poorly planned work at heights and the handling of heavy materials was the main cause.
In a similar initiative in North and North East Lincolnshire earlier this year work was stopped on 17 occasions.

Vertikal Comment

Clearly there is still a great deal of work to me done to get the message across to builders and contractors regarding the use of appropriate equipment for working at height.

While tremendous progress has been made in recent years, with the uptake of powered access and the use of alloy scaffold towers, not to mention training, there is still a huge job to do.
