First GTC-1200 in NZ

New Zealand based contractor Fulton Hogan has taken delivery of the first 120 tonne Tadano Mantis GTC-1200 telescopic crawler crane to arrive in the country.

The new crane has gone straight to work on the Waimea Community Dam project being built by the Fulton Hogan/Taylors Joint Venture. The $105.9 million project is aimed at resolving summer water shortages for the Nelson District and Waimea Plains and will utilise the full potential of the new crane’s abilities.

The GTC-1200 boasts a 47.2 metre main boom, with a 10.2 to 18 metre bifold swingaway extension that can we further extended to 32 metres. Overall width ranges from 3.66 to 5.8 metres. It is also equipped with a full telematics suite, a feature that the contractor particularly focused on.
The crane was sold and delivered by Tadano’s dealer Allcrane Sales and Service, although Tadano Mantis sales manager and technician James Land accompanied the delivery and hand over to Fulton Hogan who provided training on the operation and features of the new crane.

The operators and local team are familiarised with the crane’s features and functions

Matthew Loach, structures manager for the Waimea Community said: “The Tadano Mantis GTC-1200 ticked all of the boxes for the challenging project requirements and also future proofed our investment by being an extremely versatile machine that will be used on many more projects to come. In my opinion, Tadano have a real asset in their product line with this machine. “

“We looked at the 120 lattice boom and 110 tonne All Terrain cranes initially. We decided an All Terrain crane would be suitable but not in all conditions. The lattice boom would be great for static applications but very limited when moving on such a steep site. The Mantis covered the mobility of the ATs we looked at but with the addition of the readiness and lifting of a tracked crawler. The project site is very steep, quite spread out and prone to flooding, so mobility and reach were key. The Mantis covered that. “

“Allcrane also did a great job in organising the logistics and getting the crane to the dam and we would like to thank Tadano for providing a product specialist for familiarisation upon delivery of the crane.”

Fulton Hogan was founded Jules Fulton and Bob Hogan as a local contracting business in 1933 and covers the South Pacific region from locations in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.
