A close call - crane all at sea

Video footage and inspection photographs show the risks of simply placing a big crawler crane on a barge and sending it out to sea.

We understand that the incident occurred earlier this month off the coast of Vietnam. It seems that the boom/jib was not lashed down as the swell began to rise.

It is a little painful to watch, and the damage to the crane is substantial, but thankfully it could have been so much worse. We believe the crane is a Demag CC6800, apparently owned by a relatively well known Dutch company, but we have not been able to confirm that so will not mention it. In addition to the damage to the crane the wavering luffing jib made short work of destroying a container or two on the barge. The following are some of the photos showing the damage to the crane.
