Liebherr maritime ends year on high

Liebherr’s maritime crane division has reported it performed better than anticipated in 2020 - in spite of the adverse conditions caused by Covid-19 - while also achieving a higher order intake than 2019.

The division is responsible for Liebherr’s range of ship to shore, mobile harbour and staking cranes as well as straddle carriers, reachstackers and heavy duty offshore cranes. It began the year with a positive quarter due to a healthy order backlog from 2019 however, as most other companies, it suffered a ‘noticeable decline’ in orders throughout the second quarter as Covid-19 forced global lockdowns.

The company says that in spite of this daunting factor it managed to maintain steady production, while complying with the new hygiene and social distance requirements as well as continuing to source parts from its suppliers. Sales began to pick up during the fourth quarter, ending with an order intake slightly above 2019 levels.

Sales director Andreas Müller said: “This development gives grounds for optimism and provides a good base to start in 2021. A stable order intake will be the goal and a challenge in the coming year - especially due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. If we manage to achieve this, we should also achieve an increase in sales compared to 2020 – all in all, a positive forecast.”
