Grove to unveil new 70t All Terrain

Grove will unveil a new 70 tonne four axle All Terrain crane at Bauma next week, the GMK4070L.

The new crane boasts a 60 metre main boom, - one of the longest in the class - at which it can handle 4.4 tonnes, or 8.3 tonnes on a 49 metre boom. Maximum radius is 46 metres at which it can handle one tonne. A 15 metre bi-fold swingaway extension takes the maximum tip height to 78 metres.

On the road the GMK4070Lcan travel with up to 13.3 tonnes within 12 tonne axle loads, or 5.3 tonnes on 10 tonne axle loads. In places like the UK, it can manage 17.8 tonnes, just shy of its full 19 tonnes maximum counterweight.

Power comes from a single Mercedes Stage V/Tier 4 Final diesel with ECO mode which can be used in conjunction with the transmission’s Fuel Saver mode, for improved fuel efficiency. A Telma retarder is incorporated into the driveline to help with braking.

The new 70 tonne is one of the first to offer the new Grove CONNECTTM digital platform that provides owners with real-time access to fleet data. Something that will be rolled out to more Manitowoc crane lines. The MAXbase variable outrigger set up system is optional.

Product manager Andreas Cremer said: “The Grove GMK4070L offers improved engineering design and adopts several latest technologies to deliver a new level of performance, operation, serviceability, and fuel efficiency. It’s a crane that will be a true game changer, surprising many customers with just how much more a 70 tonne All Terrain crane can achieve.”

Vertikal Comment

We only have a few details of this new crane, but it will certainly go head to head with the all new Tadano AC 4.070.2 announced earlier this week. While the new Grove has a 10 metre longer main boom and eight metres more maximum tip height, the Tadano appears to have higher lift capacities, and may also have the edge in terms of roading options. But all that is too early to tell from the information we have on each crane.

One thing is for sure, this is a perfect time if you are in the market for a new 70 tonne All Terrain. And Bauma will be the place next week to check them out. You can then decide for yourself
