ARA Day 1 - a photo review

The American Rental Association’s ARA Show opened yesterday with decent attendance. Most aerial lift and telehandler manufactures were present with a growing number of Chinese exhibitors, but notoriously absent was JLG and more surprisingly Skyjack.

New products were a little short in supply, with most exhibits being North American launches of products unveiled at Bauma or other European shows last year - quite the opposite of what used to happen 15 to 20 years ago or even more recently.

The following is intended as a bare bones pictorial overview - we have so far only covered half the relevant exhibits and there is plenty of news and information that we will have to cover later.

Several companies such as Manitou and Snorkel have sneak previews of their Conexpo launch products. For example:

The Snorkel S3013E

Snorkel displayed a new 13ft almost pure electric slab micro scissor lift - the S3013E. It is almost all-electric in that while drive and steer are electric, the lift function is via a self-contained hydraulic cylinder. It is the first in a range of such machines that will be unveiled at Conexpo.

Faresin built Snorkel telehandlers

Snorkel and sister company Xtreme have massive launch plans for Conexpo, and also confirmed that several pre-production units of its 210ft boom lift have been working on sites in Las Vegas for some time, and that production had started on the main components for the production models.

Manitou had the first unit in an all-new North American telehandler line - the MTA series - on show in a ‘sneak preview’ of its Conexpo launch plans, which will include the MTA 642, MTA 842, MTA 1055, MTA 1242 AND MTA 1255. The company says that it is aiming to win a 25 percent share of the North American market in the years ahead. The longer wheelbase units employ many of the latest European features such as automatic parking brakes, but also the engine is mounted at 90 degrees to the machines length so mechanics can reach both sides of the engine.

North American launches included the ultra-compact ULM telehandler, along with electric compacts and the 22 metre/6,000kg MRTE 2260 electric/hybrid 360 degree telehandler, which employs a battery pack along with optional range extender. The company also had a full line up of its latest boom lifts as it looks to push into the North American access market.

More interestingly perhaps, Manitou also stated that it is developing its own range of all electric slab scissor lifts, which will be built at a new greenfield facility in India. Platform heights will range from 20ft to 40ft, with working heights of six to14 meres.
