Kalmar acquires E terminal tractor line

The Kalmar division of Cargotec is to acquire the product rights for the Lonestar electric terminal tractors in the USA. The manufacturer Lonestar Speciality Vehicles will transfer the intellectual property to Kalmar, but act as its contract manufacturing partner for the products. The deal is due to complete at the end of the month.

Lonestar SV, based in Texarkana, Texas, develops and manufactures electric powered commercial vehicles. The company delivered its first electric tractor in November 2019, and has a leading position in the US electric terminal tractors market.

Kalmar vice president for terminal tractors Hermanni Lyyski said: “Kalmar is the industry forerunner in eco-efficient cargo and material handling solutions with a strong track record of delivering industry firsts in the electric range. The demand for electric terminal tractors is increasing and we want to make sure we have a comprehensive portfolio of electric vehicles available for the market. It is a key strategic objective for us to advance our own and our customers’ decarbonisation journey, and we are excited to widen our existing range of electric solutions with the acquired electric terminal tractor product range.“

The electric terminal tractors will be branded as Kalmar TX and will initially be available in the Americas. This latest move follows the announcement at the end of last year to develop fuel cell terminal tractors in partnership with Toyota Tsusho America.
Kalmar is also due to be set up as a standalone separately listed company in the new year. Hiab and Kalmar to separate?
