The boom of a lattice crawler crane stuck the Talmadge Memorial bridge in Savannah on Friday, as the barge mounted crane attempted to pass under it.
The boom went over the back and crashed onto deck and into the water. Thankfully no one was hurt in the incident. The barge was being moved by the Lorna Myrick tug boat, owned by marine contactor Myrick Marine. The incident was captured on a video taken from another barge and crane heading in the same direction. Photos of the recovery can be seen at the bottom.
The Georgia Department Of Transport issued the following statement on Friday: “The US 17/SR 404 Spur Bridge in Savannah will be closed beginning this afternoon so that the agency can conduct an inspection of the bridge, following a bridge strike incident in which a crane struck the underside of the main span of the bridge during a crane transit on the Savannah River.
“The bridge, known as the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, will remain closed for an indeterminate period out of an abundance of caution to inspect for any possible damage, a measure taken for the safety of the traveling public.”
The bridge reopened around four hours or s after it was closed and another barge with crane came to the rescue and removed the boom.
