Deutz opens first HVO fuel station

German engine manufacturer Deutz has opened its first hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel filling station at its plant in Cologne.

According to the comapny all of its diesel powered vehicles, including cars, forklifts and service vehicles can now be refuelled with HVO fuel and those located in the area will use the facility. The company says tthat the fuel has no negative impact on performance, but can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent.

Chief executive, Denastian Schulte said: “This step will help to reduce our scope one emissions and brings us closer to our goal of becoming a climate neutral company by 2050. Switching our fleet to HVO also demonstrates how diesel engines can immediately help to mitigate climate change, with minimum effort and cost. An internal combustion engine is only as dirty, or clean, as the fuel it runs on. That is why this technology can be much more than just a stopgap.”

Markus Müller, technology officer added: “All Deutz engines are already approved for use with HVO. Some of our customers are already using the fuel to power their new vehicles. Now is the time for incentives that encourage emission intensive industries such as agriculture to switch to alternative fuels like HVO.”

The company initially obtained the palm oil-free fuel from the Finnish company Neste, which has been developing renewable fuels since 1996.
