Three men were rescued from a tilting scissor lift at the Ipswich Town football stadium yesterday after it had tilted to a dangerous angle.
We have few details on how it developed, but understand that the Rough Terrain Scissor, possibly a 43ft full width model, was working at a platform height of around 12 metres when it began tilting or tilted sharply. This could be down to jacks creeping down on one side OR a collapsing culvert under the jacks or the wheels on one side.
Thankfully the contractor's crew had the foresight to bring in a telehandler to stop the lift tilting any further and attempt to push it back to the vertical, until the fire and rescue team arrived. The three men were brought down after less than an hour, and no one was hurt in the incident.
A statement from the club said: "We are aware of a third party contractor’s scissor lift being involved in an incident at Portman Road. Workmen on site initially assisted until fire and rescue arrived very soon after. Everyone was soon taken down to safety and there are no reported injuries."
The men were carrying out upgrade work to the Sir Alf Ramsey stand at the Portman Road stadium, ready for the teams re-entry to the UK Premier League, 22 years after having been relegated.
