JCB's hydrogen engine approved

JCB has received approval from 11 European licensing authorities for the commercial use and sale of its hydrogen combustion engine in construction machinery.

The engine, developed over three years by a team of 150 engineers as part of a £100 million project, is, according to JCB, the first of its kind in the construction equipment sector.

JCB chairman Anthony Bamford said: "This formal type approval/certification paves the way for the sale and use of hydrogen engines across Europe. I couldn't have hoped for a better start to the year. I am delighted for our team of engineers who have worked tirelessly to reach this stage."
Anthony Bamford receives formal certification from RDW officials André van de Visser and Marc Feijen

The Netherlands' Vehicle Authority RDW was the first to issue certification for its hydrogen combustion engine, followed by Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein with more countries set to follow with certification later this year.

JCB has produced over 130 hydrogen engines currently being used in backhoe loaders, telescopic handlers, and generators. Real world testing of the hydrogen powered equipment is currently underway at customer sites.
