Completing the WT1000 was a long and difficult process. It officially started in May 2006 and according to Wumag's managing director Ludger Greskötter, was "one of the most comprehensive development programme in the history of our company."

"The aim was to develop the most stable machine of its class," he said. "The search for an undercarriage was difficult – particularly because of the high demand from the crane manufacturers."

Eventually they came to an agreement with Tadano Faun, using the 530 hp undercarriage of the 110G5. The unit has hydro pneumatic suspension and automatic levelling and has an extensive list of standard items.

35 hours of operating without refuelling are possible according to the manufacturer. The basket has a maximum capacity of 600kg - 530 when extended.
