Mateco acquires Segruco

Mateco España, the Spanish operation of Belgian owned German rental group Mateco has acquired crane and access rental company Sergruco from owner Miguel Pérez in an all share purchase deal. No details of the transaction have been released.
Sergruco’s Teruel location

Established in the late 1990s as a crane and transport business, Sergruco is based in Teruel, roughly half way between Zaragoza and Valencia in Eastern Spain along with a branch closer to Valencia in Segorbe. Its 700 unit rental fleet includes aerial work platforms with boom lifts to 86ft, scissors to 53ft and 3.5 tonne truck mounts up to 20 metres, a full line up of fixed frame telehandlers and a crane fleet that runs from loader cranes to All Terrains up to 160 tonnes, in addition to earth moving equipment and cabins. Revenues are in the region of €7.5 million with 30 employees across the two locations .

The acquisition is part of Mateco’s strategic growth plan for the Iberian Peninsula, which includes the opening of four new branches this year - Huelva, Burgos, Ourense and Cantabria, the rollout of its general equipment rental division in Alicante, Alcoy and Valencia, as well as further complementary acquisitions.

Sergruco owner Miguel Pérez said: “These have been many years of hard work, growing the company while strengthening the industrial and economic development of Teruel. The talent and commitment of the team —especially Cristóbal Escriche — makes me incredibly proud of what we have achieved. Now it’s time to focus on my family and friends, and that’s why I have decided to pass the baton to Mateco. I am completely confident that this is the best possible choice to continue this project and support my team moving forward”.

His business partner and director Cristóbal Escriche added: “This marks the end of a chapter in the company where I have worked side by side with Miguel, sharing and learning how the business runs. A new chapter begins for me, now as branch manager for Mateco in Teruel, where I’ll have the opportunity to join a major international company and learn a new way of doing business. I’m deeply excited and motivated to take on this new challenge”.

Mateco España chief executive Carlos Jordà said: “The acquisition of Sergruco, following several years of good relations between our companies, was driven, despite clear differences in business lines, by our cultural compatibility and shared commitment to service. This acquisition will allow us to expand our geographic coverage to include the province of Teruel and continue the rollout of our general equipment rental division. I am proud of the trust Miguel has placed in us to carry on the outstanding work he has done”.
One can’t but help wonder if there is any significance in the backdrop chosen for the handshake?

Mateco entered the Spanish rental market in February 2016 when its then parent company TVH acquired a minority stake in Vamasa, purchasing the rest of the Spanish cpmpany's equity in March 2017, and dropping the Vamasa name in favour of Mateco at the end of 2018.
