Lee Lifting adds Grove GMK5250XL-1

UK rental company Lee Lifting has taken delivery of a 250 tonne Grove GMK5250XL-1 All Terrain crane for film and television industry applications.
The unit arrives on site in its new livery

The five axle GMK5250XL features an eight section 78.5 metre main boom topped by an 18 metre bi-fold swingaway extension that can be extended to 34 metres with additional inserts. Features include Grove’s Maxbase variable outrigger setup and all wheel steer. Power comes from a single HVO ready Stage V Mercedes diesel which is said to offer a 30 percent reduction in fuel consumption. Lee Lifting specified the unit with dual winch configuration for holding lighting equipment while managing cable looms simultaneously.

The new crane joins a GMK5150L and GMK3060L in the company’s fleet and has already been deployed to several film sets for lighting, rigging equipment and production tasks.

Director Jody Whitmore said: "Originally, we were going for a smaller capacity crane, but we switched to the Grove GMK5250XL-1 after evaluating upcoming projects and realising we needed more flexibility and specs that met our evolving needs. It's the highest capacity crane on five axles, which offers more lifting power without jumping up to a six axle crane that would be harder to manage and fit on job sites. With the 150 tonne Grove we got a really long boom, with the 60 tonne Grove we got a hydraulic luffing jib, and now with the 250 tonner we've got the strongest crane on five axles.”

Lee Lifting operates from a base near London’s Heathrow Airport, covering central London, but has also built up a strong business working with the regional films studios of Pinewood, Leavesden, Shepperton, Longcross and Elstree studios.
