Crane jib falls and kills man

An Indian man died and two others sustained serious injuries in a worksite accident in Mameer yesterday.

K V Abubacker, aged 59, was painting the crane at around 11am when its jib suddenly gave way and fell on him and two other workers.

Kanjiraparambil Unnikrishnan, 39 and Ayyumukkil Mohammed, 43, suffered multiple fractures though their condition is not life threatening, according to Salmaniya Medical Complex sources.

Mr Abubacker died before paramedics reached the scene, they said. All three men work for the Turk Heavy Transport Company, Mameer.

Mr Abubacker was preparing thecrane for repainting, said company director Khalid Turk.

"There was clear instruction from the garage supervisor and the safety officer of what was required".

Mr Abubacker, who worked for the company for 24 years.
