Bridge drops crane

A Rough Terrain crane broke through the road surface of a bridge over a highway yesterday between Detroit and Ann Arbor. The bridge or overpass, was being prepared for demolition this weekend ready for a replacement.

The dangling crane

Workers were cutting the bridge’s concrete deck into sections for removal, and that may have weakened the structure so that when the crane moved it dropped through the bridge deck sending debris raining down on the highway below.

The road was quickly closed backing traffic up for miles. With the crane hanging precariously over the highway it remains closed while a large crane is brought in to remove it and the bridge is stabilised.

No accidents or injuries were reported.
