Mobile tower crane tip
A mobile tower crane from the NMT fleet has tipped into a building in Reading, England this morning. We have been told that nobody was hurt in the incident.

The crane stopped tipping when the jib landed on the roof of he building
No details are available at time, but looking at the photos that we have been sent it looks as though the outrigger base of the crane - a six axle Spierings - has retained its integrity, suggesting that the load may have swung, or been pushed out of radius causing the crane to lose stability??

A closer look
Thankfully there were no injuries, although the operator was in the elevated cab at the time, but was able to climb down on the ladder/elevator track. Hopefully the damage is as light as it appears from the photographs. Around 50 people have been evacuated from the immediate area pending the recovery of the crane which is expected to be completed tomorrow.

The crane has been righted and made safe, using a 220, a 200 and a 40 tonne crane, not helped by heavy rain overnight on Saturday. The last two sections of the jib however were badly damaged, preventing it from being folded. The factory has sent a technician to help, but eventually the sections had to be removed and the crane was folded and departed site on Sunday night/early Monday morning.
We assume that those evacuated have now returned to their homes.

What was the purpose of evacuating 50 people? What's all that about? I'll bet there were more than that milling about inside the 'Safety Cordon'! Jeeeeeezzzzz.....

Hi,
It's back on its outriggers and now facing over the front, I'm not so sure how the jib can jam at the trolley position at about 55 metres out. I doubt very much if the whole thing would tip with nothing in the hook, or was there something on the hook weighting more than the 980kg as per the spec on short riggers ?
The question is, the advance warning signs are out to advise of the intended road closure plus the road is at least 12 metres wide, so why short rig it ?
Correction... its not operating, they say the jib has jammed ! Looks like its going to be a few days yet while they get the jib folded back in again !
I see the crane is back upright and operating today... clearly the driver's seat got a thorough cleaning overnight ! Glad nobody was hurt !
