Cast adrift
We have received countless emails and photos from our readers of a scissor lift being used to carry out work on the ceiling above an indoor swimming pool.
Some bright spark decided that the best way to reach the overhead beams was to drive an electric scissor lift - possibly a 32ft JLG 3248RS - onto some sort of raft and strapped it in place. Two men have then climbed aboard pushed out into the middle of the pool and fully elevated the lift. The picture speaks for itself.

Clearly a lot of thought has gone in to this - surely it would have been quicker and safer by far to have brought in a small spider lift, which is ideally suited to this type of work?! The risks of something going wrong here are obvious. While they might have a soft landing the two tonne scissor lift will be right behind them and a smack in the head in the middle of a pool is not ideal. Aside from that there would be a substantial cost and disruption to recover the lift and decontaminate the pool.

Agreed it's crazy.
Just for fun only - anyone else thought how much fun it would be to jump off?

I’m reminded of a serious accident years ago in Texas. Two workmen used a four-wheeled man lift on a barge on the Brazos River to weld a walking bridge for Baylor University football stadium. Wearing harnesses and lanyards they elevated safely but tragedy struck when the manlift rolled off the barge into the river. One man drowned. The other man worked himself out of his harness but suffered hypothermia and trauma.

........and these pool pirates are not even wearing life jackets !

This is beyond insane. Had it toppled over (my feeling is there is a strong chance it would) the costs would be enormous: not only retrieving the machine but the costs of cleaning the pool, the time the pool is unavailable and so much more. These workers are absolute cowboys and I’ll bet my life they would not be insured to do this, placing a huge liability on the swimming pool owners.

Rubyroo are you saying that because there is a RAMS this makes the job safe?
Eric_L
@rubyroo, I'm sure they thought that they knew what they were doing, but if they had any experience in machine stability testing, especially on slab machines, they would know that it isn't safe.

Which company are you talking about? The manufacture, the company that these men work for?... you have a link for this original post?
rubyroo
The company actually commented on the original post saying this was all done and set up according to there rams and equipment was set up as designed for use
So just because you’ve never seen it does not mean it’s not in use and safe
Plus there web page shows hundreds of similar jobs including equipment used for lifting items up on forks
