Crane goes over in BVI

A boom truck tipped over onto a school building yesterday in Road Town, British Virgin Islands.

The crane/boom truck, a Terex unit owned by the operator - Kenneth Smith, was working on the steel frame of the roof of the new St. George’s Primary School in Road Town when it tipped on to the existing school buildings, causing extensive damage to the roof.

The boom seriously damaged the school roof


Smith received is reported to have broken his arm, while Hesketh Newton, a banks-man working for the contractor, Newton Construction escaped with minor scratches and bruises. The school buildings were unoccupied at the time as the school had closed for the day.

Two of the outriggers were not properly extended


The cause of the accident is almost certainly due to the fact that the cranes outriggers has not been extended on one side.
