Fatal crane platform drop

A mobile crane equipped with a man platform suspended from the hook, dropped its load yesterday at a mine in Sweden killing the two men working from the platform.

The 30 tonne crane had lowered the basket down a elevator shaft being constructed at LKAB’s Vitåforsgruvan mine in Malmberget, in order for them to carry out inspection work.

The crane was located at the 1040 metre level while the basket were found according to a report we have received, at the 1136 metre level.

We have no information yet on what caused the failure, the crane was a compact All Terrain crane – reportedly a Demag.
