Fatal crane cable failure
A man died and another was seriously injured during a lift at the Tuzla shipyard in Istanbul Turkey, after a wire rope failed.
As many as 15 employees were helping while the crane lifted a bulky slipway at the Selahattin Arslan Shipyard, when the cable gave way killing Metin İnanır, 23, and injuring Ramazan Kocatepe.
The men’s union Limter-İş claim that the crane was being used incorrectly and in violation of local safety at work rules.
According to the union there have been over 130 fatalities at the Tuzla shipyards over the past 20 years.
