Boom truck platform tips

A boom truck fitted with a two man platform dropped its boom onto a roof last week in Twin Falls, Idaho, while placing a large sign onto the new St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center.

Two men were working from the platform while local reports claim that the crane was being operated by a third person on the ground. No one was seriously hurt in the accident, although the two were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The crane, a 30 ton Manitex M30 100 with 100ft main boom was working for Golden West Signs of Boise, which owns a number of such units for the installation and servicing of the signs which it produces.

The crane came to rest with its boom on the roof

The outriggers on the crane appear to have been fully extended, including the front jack, however a safety officer inspecting the accident, suggests that the platform was over-extended and gusty winds may have compounded the situation.

Two mobile cranes were called in to ‘right the upturned boom truck, which they did the same day.
