Ainscough's TC 2800-1 for Olympic challenge

Ainscough Crane Hire recently used its 600 tonne Terex TC 2800-1 truck mounted lattice boom crane to place 10 air conditioning, containerised tank and cylinder room units in the new Westfield shopping complex on the Olympic East London site.

Conveniently located for visitors attending the 2012 Olympic Games, the new shopping mall stands at the heart the busy construction site. With different trade specialists working in close quarters and restrictions on how close lifting gear coudl get to the buildings.

Ainscough's TC2800-1 truck mounted lattice boom crane placed 10 air conditioning, containerised tank and cylinder room units in the new Westfield shopping complex.

The longest of the 10 unit lifts was carried out with the luffing jib fixed at a 15 dgree offset, allowing the crane to take the 10 tonne load out to the required radius of 128.5 metres.

Assembled over three days, the TC 2800-1 was configured with 72 metres of main boom plus a 72 metre luffing jib and 30 metre superlift mast. The ballast included 160 tonnes of regular counterweight and 300 tonnes of superlift ballast.

Ground bearing pressure was just 5.6 tonnes/square metre

“The new Westfield Shopping complex is a core component of the Olympic development project and access to the building is very restricted,” said Steve Wathen, commercial director of Ainscough’s Heavy Cranes. “Working to a tight schedule, we needed to move in, complete the lifts efficiently and safely, dismantle and move out in just seven days to leave room for other teams. In addition to its outstanding long reach capacity and lifting performance, the truck mounted design, compact dimensions and straightforward assembly of the TC 2800-1 were also great benefits that worked very well for us on this highly challenging job.”

Driven directly onto the construction site via temporary roadways, the TC 2800-1 had to meet the sites six tonnes/square metre maximum ground pressure limit. This was accomplished by deploying its 14 x 14 metre, X-type outriggers on extra large 7.5 x 2.2 metre heavy-duty outrigger mats, reducing ground bearing pressure to 5.6 tonnes per square metre - a very low figure for a crane of this size.
