Manitou to launch new booms

Manitou will launch two new articulated/telescopic booms at APEX next week, with 79 and 85ft platform heights.

The new models, the 260TJ and 280TJ are two variants of the same base unit, both use a short single stage riser and three section telescopic boom, but while the 26 has a regular fixed length articulated jib the 28 employs a two section telescopic jib similar to that introduced by the Haulotte H28TJ+ and more recently the JLG 1500SJ.

The new models are an interesting combination in terms of specification thanks to the fact that they are articulated booms they are more compact than equivalent straight telescopics and yet due to the short length of the riser outreach is closer to that a telescopic than an articulated boom lift. With tuck under jibs both fold down to overall lengths of around eight metres.

The new Manitou 280TJ

In terms of other specifications none are class-leading but all are respectable, maximum platform capacity is 400 and 350kg respectively, which will be of interest to some users, although much will depend on if it is restricted or not and that will depend on how much the final units will weigh.

Manitou has yet to release any substantive specifications so a full analysis will have to wait until after APEX.

Vertikal Comment

Manitou is probably wise to stay with at least some articulation in these booms, it has had some success in the 46ft articulated market sector with its 160ATJ. These new models appear to follow the style/concept set by Grove many years ago with its AMZ66/68 and AMZ 86XT model ranges, but sensibly with a three section boom. While the short riser does not offer a great deal of up and over reach it does combine some of the benefits from both articulated and telescopic booms lifts.

Whether Manitou can win a wider slice of the rough terrain boom lift market remains to be seen. One thing you can expect is that the 'fit and finish. on these new models will be good.
