Unic to unveil big spider crane

Unic Cranes Europe will launch the world’s most powerful spider crane the Unic URW-1006 at Intermat next week.

The company has issued a short sneak preview video clip of the new crane prior to the formal unveiling on Monday.

The professionally produced teaser video is worth a look – with your volume controls turned full – regardless of whether you are in the market for a 10 tonne mini crane or not.

The all new Unic URW1006

The new spider crane boast a hook height of up to 30.7 metres, using its 23 metre six section boom and maximum jib. It can lift a useful 1,000kg at this height and take loads out to a maximum radius of 24.3 metres. An optional fully luffing jib is also available. The 10 tonne maximum capacity is a useful three metre radius.

And yet the unit is just two metres wide, with an overall chassis length of just over five metres when closed, allowing it to squeak into tight spots close to the lifting point. It is also the first Unic to offer pick & carry duties, with the ability to lift and travel with a load of up to 1.5 tonnes. Indoor/outdoor power sources of Diesel and AC electric are both on board.

The Unic URW-1006 is also one of the first cranes to be fitted with a state-of-the-art Wylie i4500 safe load indicator which gives operator feedback on a high-resolution colour LCD screen. Other features include a user-friendly radio remote control, working area limitation and the ability to be disassembled and reassembled easily so that it can be lifted into to more awkward lifting locations, such as roof tops.

Graeme Riley, chief executive of Unic Cranes Europe said: “We think that this online clip will really whet people’s appetites before we reveal the URW-1006 at Intermat Paris. We wanted to create some buzz around our new model in the run up to the exhibition by showcasing Unic’s technical expertise and innovative design. Now we have the world’s smallest and largest mini spider cranes in the Unic range, we can bring efficient and safe lifting solutions to an even wider breadth of industries.”

And finally should you not be heading out to Paris next week, you may have a second chance to see this revolutionary new crane on the GGR stand at Vertikal Days in late June.

Vertikal Comment

Just a short one… this is an exciting development in that the crane, while still very compact, has some serious reach and lift capacities for its size. It wasn’t that long ago that a boom of this size was the long reach option on a 25 to 30 tonne truck crane.

Spider and mini crawler cranes are still finding new applications as they help contractors solve challenging lifting problems, as well as saving them money by the use of a smaller crane. And less site preparation works.

This development probably takes the spider crane to the top of its capacity development potential? But given that it is also likely to take the concept into more new applications, one never knows. Take a break and watch the video... It’s less than two minutes long but very artful.
