UpLift go DAF

A low chassis height for easy loading and the manoeuvrability provided by rear wheel steering, were two of the key reasons behind Uplift’s decision to select three new DAF, Fax CF85 eight-wheelers for its delivery fleet.

The chassis height of the Fax is just 1060 mm, combined with the ability to lower the deck still further, be exhausting the rear air bags, it creates a very gradual incline up the ramps and over the beaver tail, critical for small slab scissor lifts with minimal ground and peak angle clearance.

“This low height was a critical feature for us,” says Uplift’s joint managing director, Nick Higgins. “But we also liked the extra manoeuvrability that comes with the twin-steer arrangement at the front and its steering rearmost axle.

“It can be very important, particularly with battery-powered lifts, to get as close to the place in which it will work as possible. The second axle enables us to place heavier units right up at the front end of the body without the risk of axle overloading. The platform length of 9.2 metres allows us to load several units on board adding to the flexibility and productivity of the truck.”

UpLift selected DAF eight wheel FAX delivery trucks

Lewis Preston is the driver of the first of the three Fax’s and is said to be “overjoyed” with it. “We opted for the 380 horsepower engine,” explains Higgins, “The extra torque, helps ensure he doesn’t struggle even in the most slippery of site conditions when fully laden. On top of that he’s got a mechanical diff lock on the driven axle and traction control.

“We’ve added a few creature comforts too, because a relaxed and comfortable driver is a safer driver. The cab has a leather steering wheel, along with features like air conditioning, a CD player, electric windows and door locks, satellite navigation equipment has also been added to help locate delivery points more easily.

“We worked very closely with DAF’s dealer Chatfields of Leeds to get the spec just right on these new trucks. Their experience and technical know-how have combined well with our specialist knowledge and experience in the access platform business to create a truck that’s ideal for the job!”
