Merlo Hybrid production to start

Merlo showed the latest version of its compact hybrid telehandler at last week’s Agritechnica show in Hanover.

First seen as a prototype in 2010, the 4,000kg, seven metre 40.7 Hybrid is now ready for sale and offers substantial improvements in efficiency, along with the ability to function as an all electric machine.

The Merlo 40.7 Hybrid has electric drive when in Eco or electric mode

The machine uses a 76hp diesel combines with a 50kw electric motor in place of the usual 120hp diesel. The unit will work for up to four hours in Eco mode which combines diesel and electric power sources and for two hours on pure electric drive. The new machines uses a lithium Ion battery pack to power the electric motor and can be recharged with the diesel.

In Eco mode the diesel engine generates both hydraulic and electrical power. The hydraulic portion is used to power the boom functions and tools, while the electric motor drives the wheels via a two-speed mechanical transmission with a top speed of 40kph.

A control unit dictates whether the power is supplied by the batteries or diesel engine, which depends on the level of battery charge. Merlo believes that the system can reduce diesel consumption by as much as 30 percent as well as reduce noise, benefiting both bystanders and the operator.
