Armed man occupies tower crane
A man claiming to be heavily armed climbed a large tower crane in Berlin last night and claims to be armed with three guns and, according to some reports, a hand grenade.
The man, 39, broke into the site at Berlin’s Charité hospital in the centre of the city around 10pm last night and is currently in the cab of the crane threatening to jump. He apparently has ‘form’, having previously climbed onto high structures before threatening to jump. Germany’s SEK (Spezialeinsatzkommandos) special response unit is in place around the crane.
The current stunt is causing considerable problems this morning, with a nearby school being closed and traffic redirected. It is yet another example of how important it is to secure tower cranes from unauthorised access.
