New compact telehandlers from Bobcat

Bobcat unveiled two new six metre compact telehandlers at Intermat last week, the TL358 and TL358+.

The two models both offer a 5.8 metre lifting height with a maximum forward reach of just over 3.1 metres. The TL358 has the classic 2,600kg lift capacity while the TL358+ can handle up to 3,000kg. The company says that the new models complement, rather than replace the existing – wider - TL360. The new models have a 2.1 metre overall width and overall height. Overall length is just 4.5 metres, with a turning radius of 3.77 metres.

The operators cab can also be mounted in a higher position, to provide better visibility – although the overall height then increases. All main functions are controlled via a single joystick linked to a load sensing valve block to allow flow sharing depending on the operator choice and the application need. A new SHS (Smart Handling System) is activated via a button on the dashboard, which allows the operator to easily adjust the speed of the boom lift, telescope and fork tilting, depending on the type of work being carried out.

Power for both units comes from a Deutz Stage IIIB diesel with new ECO mode, actuated by a button on the dashboard, which maintains optimum hydraulic performance without using the engine’s full power, to provide the best performance/fuel consumption ratio. A Perkins Stage IIIA engine is available for lesser regulated markets.

Both power units are matched to a hydrostatic transmission, while optional 24 inch tyres are available for extra ground clearance and to achieve the top speed of 40kph. A ‘Turtle’ mode switches to a slower more precise speed and higher torque.

Options, include a dual FNR option, which allows the operator to choose
between the joystick or a lever on the steering wheel for forward/reverse control. A Boom Suspension system for more comfort and improved load retention.

Vertikal Comment

Bobcat has updated its telehandler product line at a fairly rapid pace, which is particularly impressive given that its volume is relatively small in comparison with the market leaders. These two new models certainly offer Bobcat dealers and customers a good new almost compact product, but once again it surprising, given that it is a company looking to increase its market share that it has not introduced a more competitively spec’d smaller machine – at least matching the Manitou 625 or JCB?

Maximum lift height is middling, while the unit is high at 2.1 metres – when competitors are all at two metres or lower – is also wider and longer than most others, many of which are under four metres long, with an overall width of between 1.8 and 1.85 metres. Forward reach is also the lowest of the main players, most of which are at 3.3 metres or above.

In terms of specification the TL358 is wide, high, long and short on outreach for a compact machine. Having said all that the TL358+ is a reasonably competitive machine, so looks like Bobcat has designed a very good three tonne/6 metre model, and then made a bulky compact 2.5t/6m model. While others have optimised the smaller machine and introduced slightly weaker larger versions. Perhaps Bobcat has it right? although given the success of Manitou’s 625 we think not.
