Crane overturn in Florida

A Rough Terrain crane, lost stability yesterday while lifting roofing sheets onto the roof of a new build in Pembroke Pines, Florida, on the north east side of Miami.

The crane, a 59 tonne Tadano TR650XXL, owned by Sims Crane, but operated by the contractor on a bare lease basis, was lifting a stack of roofing sheets with its full five section 42 metre main boom fully extended along with a 9.8 metre swingaway extension in place and offset.

The crane looks to have been well set up with outriggers fully extended and down with decent sized mats under the pads. There is also no sign of the ground giving way or a structural issue, this seems to be simply a case of overload.

The crane shortly after the incident occured

A man sprained his ankle jumping clear of the falling crane, while the operator was unhurt, the crane stopped when the load touched down and the crane boom came to rest on the installed roof.
