Soft ground overturn

A Rough Terrain crane overturned in a refinery owned and operated by Suncor in Commerce City, Colorodo on Saturday.

The crane, a Grove RT770E was helping carry out routine maintenance on Saturday morning, with full boom extended working - on what looks like recently graded/e3xcavated ground - when at least one of the outriggers sunk into the ground causing the crane to overturn.

The outrigger sunk deep into the ground

The outriggers were properly set and a small set of mats were used, however they were too small for the disturbed ground on the load side of the crane. The outrigger bean sunk right up to the chassis. We have been told that no one was hurt in the incident.

Investigators were looking into the cause yesterday, while preparations were being made to recover the unit.

Why do they need investigators, it appears to me that yet another case has been solved by the crane experts and media!!

Old Sweat Old Sweat
Obviously someone didn,t check the suitability of the mats with the ground loading pressure....Preventable accident.
