Another fatal load drop

A man was killed and another injured when two slings broke as a crane lifted a heavy generator in Hannover, New Jersey yesterday.

The crane was lifting the generator with canvas strap type webbing slings when the two legs on one side of the load snapped, dropping, or rather flipping, the generator onto the two men who were guiding it into place on a prepared concrete pad. We understand that the man who died, Joseph Donahue Jr, was declared dead at the scene.

The 40 tonne truck crane was well within its capability and the lift had been going well

The crane, A 40 tonne National Crane NBT45, was working on the site of a new fire station in the Whippany area of the town, which is due to be completed later this spring. OSHA is investigating the cause of the incident.

The slings were attached to the bottom of the generator, causing it to 'flip' once the slings on one side had failed

Two strap slings failed dropping one side of the generator

Vertikal Comment

This is second fatality that we are aware of this week involving failed slings, on Monday a man died after the chain set he was using to unload stacks of re-bar failed dropping the load onto him. Both incidents highlight how important it is to have decent quality inspected slings and to keep well clear of the load when it is at a height that it would cause harm if dropped.

Slings are too short and look a bit small, small spreader would have been the answer or a heavier rated sling as there would have been bending. Condolences to the mans family.

When are riggers and operators, the information given by rigging manufacturers about how to use rigging gear, going to take that seriously? When I try to convince riggers that they have to take bending, choker hitch, sharp edges, inspections,..in account, they saying that there is a safety factor on rigging... Don't count or calculate on safety factors. There is a Working Load Limit, please respect that!
