Telehandler overturn
A telehandler overturned on a high street construction site in Andover, UK last Thursday, thankfully no one was injured in the incident.

The telehandler was lifting a large heavy wooden cladding panel suspended from the forks with chain slings.
The JCB 540 owned by rental company UK Forks, was lifting a large suspended wooden cladding panel into place on the façade of a new building when it went over. The unit's outriggers were raised and it had moved onto a camber, with the swinging load and side angle causing it to overturn sideways. The machine narrowly missed a Nationwide scissor lift helping install the panels.

The damage to the building was relatively minor
Site manager Alan Edge said “Steps to remedy the situation have been carried out in close cooperation with the Health and Safety Executive and the work is scheduled to resume shortly. The incident was the result of driver error. The job involved lifting heavy cladding panels on to the building. Due to the camber of the road and the height of the lift, the tele-handler tipped over. It has obviously given everybody quite a scare.”
Two cranes were called into to remove the panel and lift the telehandler back on to its wheels, working in very tight quarters.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation showed the incident was preventable if Payne had followed the telehandler’s operating instructions and made sure that it was on firm level ground before full raising the boom.
The builder - Linden Ltd, a division of Galiford Try, also failed to ensure that the equipment was maintained properly and the tyre pressures were found to be lower than recommended.

With a large suspended wooden cladding panel hanging from the forks, it looks like the pendulum effect took it over sideways.

Research undertaken by a mayor telescopic handler manufacturer indicates that a 5% reduction in tire pressure from the manufacturer’s values can result in a 30% reduction in capacity at certain points on the load-height-radius curve which could result in the vehicle overturning !
