CICA Trainee of the Year

The New South Wales branch of the Crane Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has announced the top trainees graduating from its new nationally accredited Certificate III in Crane Operations.

The first Trainee of the Year was Corey Davis of DJ Adair Crane Services, while the runner up was Thomas Borger of Borger Crane Hire & Rigging. Ryan Waters of DJ Adair Crane Services and Lachlan Hagan of Borger Crane Hire & Rigging were also highly commended.

CICA NSW branch chairman, Paul Churchill said, “After working on establishing the Traineeship in NSW, it was a feeling of accomplishment to present awards and certificates of acknowledgement, to the four nominees for the first ever Trainee of the Year award. We are now working on encouraging more crane-related companies to put a trainee on as there is no replacement for experience.”

“Experience over time should be the basis of learning for newcomers to the crane industry, not one week or less courses that do nothing to properly equip the trainee for what is often referred to as a high risk industry”.

Shawn Borger of Borger Crane speaking of his two trainees added: “These two young men are not old enough to get their high risk tickets so we feel that it is a good start into the crane industry to offer them training amongst their older colleagues. With the help of TAFE for their theory and our guidance for their practical work, this will be their best outcome. We are already looking for four new traineeships for next year as we see a real problem in our industry if we don’t offer opportunities for the next generation coming into the crane industry”.

Danny Adair of Adair Cranes said: “Ryan and Corey are good young men and learning good old school ways by starting from scratch. Both are doing me proud and for Corey to win the award was awesome. A lot more companies could put their hands in their pockets and get this Traineeship to a level so that we won't have a need to employ cereal packet ticket holders. I am a believer that you will only get out of it what you put in to it. The industry has an ageing workforce that needs the knowledge passed down to these guys to try and bring back the skill levels of yesterday and a can do attitude”.
