Crane Boom breaks

What looks like a Manitowoc 4100 or possibly a 3900 in Lampson blue colours, suffered a sudden boom collapse yesterday. The crane was rigged with between 33 and 45 metres of boom and jib when the main boom simply snapped off about halfway up.

The crane was operating on the site of a new administration building under construction for Aurora University Hospital. The crane driver was slightly injured when he jumped from the cab during the incident. As it was he would have fared better if he had remained in the cab, as the crane remained stable,.

The scene was eventually turned over to construction and crane company employees for investigation into the accident cause. OSHA was also reported to be on site.
