First hybrid straddle carrier for Japan

Japanese terminal operator Tokuyama Kairiku Unso K.K has ordered the first hybrid Kalmar straddle carrier in Japan for the Port of Tokuyama.

The hybrid straddle carrier uses a diesel powered generator to top up/recharge its lithium-ion drive train, while regenerative braking and load lowering also provides a charge to the battery pack. Fuel consumption is said to be up to 40 percent lower than that of the standard diesel electric models.

Tokuyama Kairiku Unso president, Takashi Yamada, said: “We chose to partner with Kalmar because of their strong reputation as a leading brand in the terminal equipment field and the excellent service we have had from the Kalmar team. We are looking forward to implementing this proven, eco-efficient technology at the terminal and building a successful partnership with Kalmar moving forward.”

Located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, south west Honshu, the Port of Tokuyama handles 137,000 20ft containers a year, Tokuyama Kairiku Unso is the largest terminal operator at the port.
