Two Spierings for HK Airport

Hong Kong based Gammon Construction has taken delivery of two of the first Spierings self erecting tower cranes in the region from local distributor Alatas.

The order includes a six axle SK1265-AT6 and a SK2400-R crawler mounted self-erecting mobile tower cranes. The SK1265-AT5 can lift 1,700kg at a radius of 60 metres and to a maximum height of 64.2 metres. It can also take its maximum capacity of 10 tonnes to a radius of 13.2 metres.

The crawler mounted SK2400-R has a maximum capacity of 18 tonnes, which it can take to a radius of 14.6 metres, and can handle 5.5 tonnes at its 42 metre jib tip. It offers a horizontal hook height of 35.5 metres and a maximum 55 metres when luffed to 30 degrees. It has a total setup time of less than 60 minutes and can travel when fully erected without the need to fold or lower the tower or jib.

Both cranes will be working on the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport and used for the construction of two 1,800 metre automated monorail type transportation and baggage handling systems.

Gammon had originally planned on using rail mounted tower cranes for the project, however the flexibility and fast set up times of the Spierings, coupled with the ability for the SK2400 to move fully erected, convinced the contractor to look at the Spierings cranes. Alatas will provide full support and back up of the two cranes during the length of the project.

Alatas general manager, Florian Philippeau, said: “The sale of Spierings mobile tower cranes to Hong Kong marks a real evolution in the crane market and we thank Gammon and the Airport Authority for giving us the opportunity to prove their great advantages and performances for Hong Kong’s projects. Alatas will be here to look after the cranes for the whole project duration to ensure they live up to Gammon’s expectations.”

Jeroen Kerkhoff, Spierings export sales representative, added: “A year and half ago we started the corporation with Alatas Asia to focus more on the high potential markets in South East Asia. We are proud to deliver the first cranes to this 'state of the art' project which will also allow us to show other potential customers the benefits of the Spierings concept.”

You will find more information on this project and mobile self erecting tower cranes in general in the next issue of Cranes & Access due out early next month.
