Tower crane over in Milan

A city type tower crane collapsed onto the roof of a low rise apartment block in Rozzano on the south side of Milan, Italy yesterday.

The crane overturned during a freak weather storm, which is said to have included massive hail stones and high winds that were compared with a tornado. The relatively new Potain crane had been erected in order to support renovation work on the block and tipped from the counterweighted base. The lower counterweights damaged a perimeter wall, while the jib and counter jib apparently pierced the roof. No one was involved or hurt in the incident. The police evacuated 24 families from the building, while the removal of the crane takes place.
