Another crane collapse at Indian port

A ship to shore port crane is reported to have collapsed last week at Kakinada Deep Water Port - KSPL - in India, taking the life of shipping company supervisor, Rayapati Vara Prasad, 45. He was declared dead at the scene.

The crane was apparently loading granite blocks into a cargo ship when it collapsed due, it is claimed, to overloading. Prasad was monitoring the work but was unable to move to safety in time. The incident only came to light after his family raised the issue with the CITU trade union.

CITU leader Ch Ajay Kumar claims that the KSPL does not fully comply with safety regulations while employees are at work. The incident follows a similar one at the end of 2018. See: Fatal harbour crane overturn
