Stranded in the air

A painter working on the outside of the Wheatsheaf pub in Ewell near Epsom, Surrey, was left stranded in the platform yesterday when a youth pulled up in a white van, went up to the boom lift the painter was working in switched the machine off and walked off with the keys.

The locked machine after the operator had been rescued

The first that the landlord of the Wheatsheaf knew of the situation was when a passer-by walked in and announced that there was a man outside the pub swearing his head off.
The operator was eventually rescued with a ladder and a set of spare keys eventually arrived allowing the lift to be brought down.
