Fossil free steel for Fassi
Italian crane manufacturer Fassi and Swedish steel producer SSAB have agreed a supply partnership for fossil free steel for Fassi's truck mounted cranes.
The agreement builds on an existing partnership where Fassi has used SSAB's Strenx steel in its heavy duty cranes to help improve capacities while reducing weight. The new deal will incorporate SSAB's 'Fossil free' steel and SSAB 'Zero' products, allowing Fassi to develop a new range of cranes with reduced CO2 emissions.
SSAB's Zero steel - which has been available since 2023 - is produced using steel produced from both iron ore and recycled scrap steel, fossil free electricity and biogas. The company has also developed fossil free steel using its ‘Hybrit’ technology, which replaces traditional coal based processes with hydrogen and fossil free energy. SSAB produced the world's first fossil-free steel using this technology in 2021.
Per Elfgren, head of SSAB said: "We look forward to deepening our collaboration with Fassi by delivering premium high strength steel produced with significantly lower carbon footprint. We are proud to partner with leading companies that share our passion for innovation, sustainability and unique advanced products."
Fassi chief executive Giovanni Fassi added: "Innovation is a projection towards the future. And there is no future without sustainability. For this reason, we have chosen to participate with enthusiasm and determination in this partnership with SSAB to develop our cranes of tomorrow."
