Two men were injured this morning, one of them seriously, when a tower crane broke in two at a shipyard in Maasbracht, Limburg – south of Venlo and north of Maastricht in the Netherlands.
At least one of the men was on the crane at the time, information we have received from a reliable source said that one was climbing the tower at the time and had reached a point just below where the top had parted from the bottom, he was rescued with a fire service rescue platform. The other was, we are told, in the operators cab at the time, but have not been able to confirm that.
The two were treated on site and taken to hospital by ambulance, although a rescue helicopter did attend the scene.
The base
The crane, located in the Tinnemans Shipbuilding yard had a counterweighted rail mounted base, which appears to have tilted slightly, either before or after the two came apart. The tower parting, looks as though it might be connection bolt related.
