Overhead shock incident & fall

An electrical technician, said to be in his 20s, working for Ireland’s ESB Networks, was seriously injured last Monday after contacting an overhead power line and falling from height at one of the company’s facilities in County Offaly.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The company has issued a bulletin that said: “An ESB Technician (NT) operating a mobile elevated work platform came into contact with a Live 10kV overhead line and received an electric shock and injuries from a fall from height. The Network Technician is currently in hospital receiving treatment and we wish them a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with the family and ESB colleagues. EAP supports have been made available to all who have been impacted.”

“Without prejudice to any future investigation we would like to remind all staff of the critical importance of being situationally aware of the hazards and risks in your work environment at all times. This is important in all workplaces including working on site. In a station, offices, workshops or at home."
It then goes into detail on situational awareness – see copy of the bulletin below.
