A tunnel in North Wales was closed for three days last week after an All Terrain crane caught fire while passing through it.
The incident occurred in the westbound lane of the Conwy Tunnel on the A55 on Thursday afternoon, as far as we know there were no injuries. The entire tunnel was closed for recovery work, causing a 35 mile diversion for drivers on the route. The eastbound lane reopened on Friday morning, with a contraflow system being used, until the damage in the westbound lane was repaired. It finally reopened yesterday – Sunday.

The crane involved was a two axle Terex owned by Kendley steel,
The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We fully recognise the significant impact that incidents like this can have on communities, businesses, and individuals across Wales. This was an emergency situation, and the tunnel had to be closed for the safety of all, and while a diversion was in place I know this would have added to journey time and caused disruption.”
